Tinnitus Assessment & Management.
The most important conversation starts with the most accurate picture.
We take a combination, or multi-modal, approach to tinnitus management. The right approach starts with the right assessment.
Tinnitus — the perception of ringing, buzzing, hissing, roaring, or other sounds without an external source — affects roughly one in five Australians at some point in their lives. For many, it becomes a significant burden on sleep, concentration, and wellbeing. At Deane Audiology, tinnitus is treated as the complex, multifactorial condition it is.
What's involved: A dedicated tinnitus assessment includes a full diagnostic hearing evaluation, tinnitus characterisation (pitch, loudness, maskability), validated self-report questionnaires (THI, TFI) to quantify impact, and a detailed discussion of contributing factors. Extended High Frequency testing is incorporated where clinically appropriate.
From this, a personalised management plan is developed. Depending on your profile, this may include:
Sound therapy — using external sound to reduce tinnitus perception and associated distress
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) expetise — well regarded as a fundamental tool in the tinnutis management toolbox, and delivered by recommended local experts, whom we work alongside
Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) principles — structured counselling and sound enrichment to shift the brain's response to tinnitus. If appropriate a referral to specialist clinic is helpful.
Hearing technology — mainly for clients with concurrent hearing loss, appropriately fitted hybrid hearing aids can reduce the tinnitus burden using onboard client-matched tinnitus habituation stimuli
Sleep and lifestyle counselling — addressing the vicious cycle between tinnitus, sleep disturbance, and anxiety
Cognitive strategies — collaborative work to reduce tinnitus-related distress and hypervigilance
Who it's for: Anyone experiencing persistent or distressing tinnitus, whether recent onset or long-standing. Also appropriate for clients who have been told "nothing can be done" — in most cases, multi-modal evidence-based management can meaningfully reduce impact.
Duration: Initial tinnitus consultation approximately 75–90 minutes.

“I avoided having my hearing checked for years - didn’t really want to be told what I already knew. But Rachel was patient and thorough and I never once felt rushed or sold to.”
