Extended diagnostics - beyond the standard test.

Extended High Frequency (EHF) Audiometry.

Diagnostics beyond the standard test — excellent for tinnitus management and more.

This is a service few Australian audiology clinics offer. Standard hearing tests assess frequencies up to 8,000 Hz. Extended High Frequency audiometry assesses hearing up to 16,000 Hz — a range critical for understanding why some people struggle with speech clarity or noise, and also for describing and managing tinnitus, despite a "normal" conventional hearing test.

What's involved: EHF testing uses specialist equipment to evaluate the ultra-high frequency hearing range (8,000–16,000 Hz). These frequencies are the first to be affected by noise exposure, ototoxic medications, and early age-related change — often years before a standard test would detect any shift.

Why it matters clinically:

  • Clients who report tinnitus with a "normal" hearing test often show measurable EHF changes — EHF results give a more complete picture and enable more precise counselling

  • Clients struggling to follow fast speech or understand in background noise may have EHF loss affecting consonant clarity (particularly /s/, /f/, /th/ sounds)

  • Individuals on potentially ototoxic medications (chemotherapy, certain antibiotics) benefit from EHF monitoring as an early-warning system

Who it's for: Clients with tinnitus, musicians, industrial workers, those on ototoxic medications, and anyone who has been told their hearing is "fine" but continues to experience difficulty.

Note: EHF testing is typically offered as part of a comprehensive assessment or tinnitus consultation. Ask about whether it's appropriate for your situation.

Duration: Approximately 60–90 minutes.

“I had, have, tinnitus that is always there. Only sometimes I might think, oh wow I can’t hear it, then BAM, its back! As soon as I think about it, it’s there again. Drove me crazy. Since seeing Rachel it’s way less, in fact I really don’t hear it during the day now - amazing.”
